Almost every classified transaction in Pakistan ends the same way: two strangers meeting in person, one carrying an item, the other carrying money. That moment is where nearly all of the risk sits — and where a few simple decisions remove most of it.
The good news is that the vast majority of these meetings pass without incident. This guide is not about treating every buyer as a threat. It is about the handful of habits that make you a difficult target, and about knowing where in your city is genuinely suitable.

The six rules
1 Pick the place yourself
Whoever chooses the location controls the situation. Propose somewhere public and well-populated that you already know. If the other person insists on somewhere else — particularly somewhere quieter or less overlooked — that is reason enough to decline.
2 Daylight only
Meet between mid-morning and late afternoon. Beyond safety, daylight is when counterfeit notes are visible, when paint defects on a car show up, and when scratches on a phone cannot hide.
3 Never at home
Do not give your home address, and do not accept an invitation to theirs. Meeting at your house tells a stranger where your belongings are and who lives with you. For large items that genuinely cannot be moved, meet the buyer somewhere public first, then travel together.
4 Bring someone
A second person changes the dynamic entirely and costs you nothing. For higher-value items this is not optional.
5 Tell someone your plan
Share the location, the time, the other party’s phone number, and when you expect to be finished. Share your live location from your phone if you can.
6 Be ready to walk
The ability to leave is your strongest protection. No deal is worth ignoring your own discomfort. A genuine buyer or seller will not object to reasonable caution — anyone who does has answered your question.
What makes a location suitable
Rather than memorising a list of venues, learn the criteria. Then anywhere in any city can be assessed in a few seconds.

Good categories of venue
- Shopping mall food courts — busy, covered, CCTV, security, seating, parking. The default choice in most cities.
- Bank branches — the best option for any significant cash transaction. Deposit at the counter and counterfeit notes are identified immediately.
- Large chain cafes and restaurants — staffed, lit, seating, generally recorded.
- Major petrol stations — open, well-lit, staffed, easy for both parties to find. Good for vehicle handovers.
- Mobile and electronics markets — for phones specifically, these have the advantage that a shop can verify a device on the spot.
Places to avoid
- Residential streets, including your own
- Empty car parks, particularly underground ones
- Anywhere described as “just behind” or “a bit further on” from the agreed point
- Unlit areas after dark
- Any location the other party changes at short notice
A last-minute change of venue is a serious warning sign. If you have agreed a public place and the other party asks you to come somewhere quieter, less busy, or further out when you are already on your way, cancel. Legitimate people occasionally need to change plans — but they will agree to another public place, not a secluded one.

Handling the money safely
Payment is where most losses actually occur, and the rules are simple.
If a buyer becomes impatient about a two-minute wait for confirmation, that impatience is the information you needed.
Special cases
Vehicles
Meet at a petrol station or mall car park. Accompany any test drive and check the driver holds a valid licence. Never allow an unaccompanied test drive. Complete the Excise ownership transfer at the time of sale rather than on a promise — until the record changes, the vehicle remains registered to the seller along with every challan.
Phones and laptops
Meet where the device can be tested — power, charging port, cameras, speakers, Wi-Fi. For phones, run the PTA IMEI check by sending the IMEI to 8484 from your own handset before paying. Confirm the seller has signed out of all accounts and reset the device in front of you.
Property viewings
Never view alone. Confirm the person showing you the property is the owner or an authorised agent and ask to see documentation. Do not pay any token or advance before viewing and verifying ownership.
Large furniture and appliances
Where the item genuinely must be seen at a residence, meet the other party in a public place first, travel together, and bring someone with you. Arrange transport in advance so nobody is waiting around.
Advice specifically for women selling online
Selling online is entirely normal and safe for the overwhelming majority of transactions. A few additional habits are worth adopting.
- Use the platform’s in-app chat until you are ready to meet, rather than sharing a personal number early.
- Consider a separate SIM for selling if you list frequently.
- Always meet in a staffed indoor venue — a mall or bank rather than an open car park.
- Bring someone with you as a matter of routine, not just for expensive items.
- Share your live location for the duration of the meeting.
- Remove identifying details from photographs — house numbers, street signs, documents, anything visible through a window.
- Decline anyone who pushes for a home visit, however reasonable the justification sounds.
If something feels wrong
Trust the feeling and act on it immediately. You do not owe a stranger an explanation, and you do not owe anyone a completed sale.
- End the meeting politely and leave. “I need to think about it” is sufficient.
- Move towards staff, security or the busiest part of the venue.
- Call someone and stay on the line while you leave.
- Do not follow anyone anywhere, for any reason.
- Afterwards, report the listing and the account to the platform.
- If you have been defrauded, contact your bank first, then report to NCCIA on 1799 and through their complaint portal.
