Genuine or aftermarket is a decision every car owner in Pakistan faces repeatedly, and the answer is not the same for every component. Treating it as a single question — always buy genuine, or always buy cheap — wastes money in both directions.

This guide sets out where the difference genuinely matters, where it does not, and how to tell a legitimate aftermarket part from a counterfeit sold as genuine.

Where genuine is worth it

Some components justify the premium, either because failure is dangerous or because fit precision matters.

• Braking components — pads, discs, hydraulic parts. Safety-critical, and inconsistent friction material is genuinely dangerous.
• Steering and suspension parts affecting control and geometry.
• Airbag and restraint components, which should never be sourced uncertainly.
• Timing components — a failed timing belt can destroy an engine, which makes economising on it a poor trade.
• Engine internals where tolerances matter.
• Electronic control units and sensors, where compatibility problems are difficult to diagnose.

Where good aftermarket is sensible

• Filters — oil, air, fuel and cabin, from established makers.
• Batteries, where reputable independent brands are entirely mainstream.
• Tyres, which are aftermarket by nature — choose on brand and specification.
• Bulbs and wiper blades.
• Body panels on older vehicles, where cost matters more than perfect factory fit.
• Exhaust components beyond the emissions-critical parts.
• Interior trim and cosmetic items.

Spotting counterfeits

Counterfeit packaging has improved considerably, but there are still reliable indicators.

• Price well below the market for a genuine part — the most consistent signal.
• Packaging quality — blurred printing, poor colour registration, spelling errors, flimsy card.
• Missing or poorly applied holograms, security labels or batch codes.
• Part number inconsistencies between the box and the component.
• Finish quality — rough casting, uneven machining, inconsistent coating.
• Weight noticeably different from a genuine equivalent.
• No receipt offered, or reluctance to provide one.

Buying sensibly

1. Use established suppliers with a reputation to protect, rather than the cheapest source.
2. Ask what is being fitted — genuine, which aftermarket brand, or unbranded.
3. Get it in writing on the invoice.
4. Keep the old part when work is done, so you can confirm what was actually replaced.
5. Ask about warranty on both part and labour.
6. Be suspicious of unusually cheap genuine parts — genuine parts have a floor price.
7. Buy consumables in advance rather than under pressure at a roadside workshop.

The false economy

The cheapest part is frequently the most expensive decision, for reasons that are easy to overlook at the counter.

A poor-quality filter allows contaminants through and shortens engine life. A cheap brake pad wears fast and can damage the disc. An unbranded suspension component fails early and costs the labour twice. In each case the saving at purchase is consumed several times over.

The reasonable position is not always genuine and not always cheapest — it is known quality at a fair price, which frequently means a reputable aftermarket brand rather than either extreme.
