The activation lock check
An iPhone still signed into someone else’s Apple account is unusable to you. Insist that the seller signs out of iCloud and performs a full factory reset in front of you, then let the phone boot to the initial setup screen. If it asks for a previous owner’s Apple ID at that point, the device is locked and you cannot use it. No amount of assurance replaces watching this happen.
